Community Outreach
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… Making a Positive Difference in the Lives of Individuals and in Our Communities At Webster Data, we are very fortunate to have had continued growth success over the years. In these troubled economic times, however, many are not so fortunate. Discussions at our 2008 Strategic Planning Roundtable brought a unanimous decision to proactively encourage and support community outreach efforts across our organization, and include this commitment as part of our annual Strategic Plan. Through corporate donations, individual participation and group volunteer efforts, we have been able to offer a helping hand to members of our communities who are experiencing hardships and help make their lives just a little bit better. Highlights of Some of our Activities ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… Scholarship Fund Established in the Name of One of Our Own Webster Data Communication, in cooperation with the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association’s (AFCEA) Lowcountry Chapter in Charleston, SC, established a scholarship award in the name of our own Southeastern Regional Director, Terry Watkins. Each year, the AFCEA South Carolina Lowcountry Chapter awards scholarships to a group of deserving high school seniors with interests in engineering, science, or math, who exhibit high standards of leadership, volunteerism and academic excellence. The first “Terry Watkins Award” was presented on May 20th to Catherine Varnes, a 3.94 GPA student who plans to attend Georgia Tech. as an Engineering student. Terry Watkins is very well known and well respected in the Charleston community and SPAWAR Atlantic. He spent 31 years of his career (13 years as a Senior Project Engineer and 18 years as Command Business Services Department Head) as an employee of the Command. He actively promotes and participates in many community service activities, through both AFCEA and his church. We applaud Terry for his passion to support the Warfighter and his community and are proud to have offered this very appropriate award in his name. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… Holiday Gifts and Companionship The “Adopt a Senior Citizen for Christmas” event at a local rehabilitation home provided volunteer-donated holiday gifts and, more importantly, personal visits to aged residents with no families or families living far away. This undoubtedly was a bright spot in the holiday season for many who otherwise may have been alone. Two Fairfax County families-in-need received Christmas Eve deliveries consisting of complete holiday dinners with all the trimmings and overflowing bags of wrapped gifts for all of the children. The combination of a sizeable corporate donation made by Webster Data, and additional gifts and dollars thrown in from individual employees, produced a car-load that would rival Santa’s sleigh. Seeing the faces of those adorable children light up was the best Christmas present we could have asked for. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… The Power of Teamwork Webster Data volunteers teamed up with volunteers from other organizations to bag and deliver food and household items to 30 local families who are part of a weekly food assistance program designed to provide them a helping hand until they are again able to maintain self-sufficiency. This was a great group activity and the “assembly line” approach required real teamwork, but the highlight of the day was being greeted by four small children who politely carried bag after bag of groceries into their home, and gave us a big smiling “Thank You”. |
